OCD treatment

OCD is not a preference for tidiness. It is a brain insisting that an unbearable thought must be answered, and a set of rituals that promise relief but keep raising the price.

The intrusive thought is rarely the problem. Almost everyone has strange, violent or taboo thoughts flicker through. The difference with OCD is what happens next: the thought sticks, feels meaningful, and demands proof that it is not true. So you check. You research. You confess, or replay, or ask someone to confirm you are not a terrible person. The anxiety drops for a moment — and the loop tightens.

Much of OCD is invisible. There may be no handwashing at all, only hours of internal review nobody can see. Many people spend years believing they are morally defective rather than recognizing a treatable disorder with a well-established path out.

Treatment does not require you to prove the thought false. It requires learning that you can have the thought, feel the surge, and not obey it.

Common subtypes and signs

  • Harm or violent intrusive thoughts about people you love
  • Relationship OCD — endless testing of whether you really feel it
  • Contamination fears and elaborate avoidance routines
  • Just-right compulsions until the feeling finally clicks
  • Moral or religious scrupulosity and repeated confessing
  • Mental reviewing, googling and reassurance-seeking that never fully lands

The work

ERP-informed treatment

Mapping the loop

We separate the obsession from the compulsion — including the mental ones — and chart exactly what maintains the cycle.

Graded exposure

We build a hierarchy together and approach it in your order, at your speed. Nothing surprises you and nothing is done to you.

Response prevention

The real change comes from resisting the ritual and letting the anxiety crest and fall on its own. We practice tolerating uncertainty rather than resolving it.

Reassurance is not the treatment

One of the kindest things I can do is decline to answer the question OCD keeps asking. Reassurance feels like care, but it is fuel. So instead we practice the harder, more freeing move: acknowledging that you cannot be certain, and choosing your life anyway.

Between sessions you will have specific, achievable practice — not homework designed to overwhelm you. We review honestly what you tried, what you avoided, and what the anxiety actually did when left alone. Progress is measured in compulsions not performed.

What recovery looks like

  • Intrusive thoughts show up and pass without a full investigation
  • You stop needing anyone to confirm you are a good person
  • Hours return to your day that rituals used to take
  • Uncertainty becomes uncomfortable rather than intolerable
  • You trust yourself again, without proof
